Roulette In Movies

Roulette has made its way into many high-grossing movies. One of the best-known movies to feature the game is the 1971 James Bond movie Diamonds Are Forever. Sean Connery plays Bond, who takes part in some nail-biting and high-stakes games of roulette. There’s also the classic 1941 movie Casablanca, in which a trick roulette wheel is used by the character Rick to help out a Bulgarian couple – he tells them to bet on 22, which goes on to win. Another movie featuring roulette is 1993’s Indecent Proposal, though this one showcases the riskier side of gambling. A couple, played by Woody Harrelson and Demi Moore, visit a Las Vegas casino and, after winning at craps, try their luck at roulette only to lose everything.

Run, Lola, Run is also worth mentioning. However, what this movie shows is a very unlikely scenar-io. The main character has to earn 100,000 Deutschmarks in twenty minutes to save her boyfriend’s life. She takes a huge risk by playing roulette and wins twice in a row with the number 20 both times – the odds of winning twice in a row with the same number are said to be a staggering 1,369-1. A more recent movie to feature roulette is Bad Times at the El Royale. It features a slew of contempo-rary stars, from Chris Hemsworth and Dakota Johnson to Jeff Bridges and Cynthia Erivo, and has a particularly tense scene where Dakota Johnson’s character finds her life depending on what colour pocket, red or black, the ball lands in.

Roulette In TV

Many TV shows have featured roulette in one capacity or another. One of the most memorable ones is the ‘How to Take Down a Casino’ episode of illusionist Derren Brown’s The Events series. In this episode, Brown placed a large bet using cash belonging to a member of the public and tried to use physics to determine where the ball would land. He predicted 22, but the ball ended up landing in 8, which was just one pocket away. The short-lived show Red Or Black? ran for two series and was a gameshow involving 50/50 decisions. The final round saw lucky contestants play a game of roulette for a chance to win £1 million – the show ended up making several millionaires.

Some hugely popular game shows have been inspired by roulette, such as Wheel of Fortune and The Price is Right. Though these don’t feature full-on roulette games as such, they do involve wheels being spun and prizes being won based on what segment of the wheel is the winning one. The shows incorporate other elements, including general knowledge questions, but what many viewers love the most is the spinning of the wheels, as there’s no telling what they’ll land on.
