Haitians demand trial of Baby Doc Duvalier
A total of 20 civil organizations and personalities from Haiti sent a letter to President Michel Martelly Tuesday, demanding a trial against former dictator Jean Claude Duvalier and information on the action being taken against him, reports Prensa Latina.
“We think it is of prime importance that the nation should be informed on the progress of the judicial process against the ex-dictator, arrived in the same country he devastated himself after 25 years,” said the document.
Jean Claude Duvalier, also known as “Baby Doc” returned to Haiti on January 16, 2011. Since then, relatives of the victims of his regime presented 20 demands against him.
However, a year later, no trial has been started against Baby Doc.
“The role of the Executive and the Parliament is to watch over justice and truth. We should remember it is a responsibility of the government to take all the steps necessary to establish the facts linked with the crimes committed by Duvalier” the letter said.
Baby Doc, who replaced his own father, Francois Duvalier, as President of Haiti in 1971, is accused of the death of thousands of people, violation of human rights, corruption, crime association and others.
