Celebs Support AIDS Walk LA 2009

Sunday mornings are normally a time when the streets of West Hollywood are virtually empty, save for a hand full of dog walkers moving about or die hard party-goers leaving a late late after hours. But this Sunday was different. Yesterday marked the 25th anniversary of the annual Los Angeles Aids Walk, and tens of thousands turned up to participate.
Walkers included young and enthusiastic teens from local high schools, small businesses, and national corporations, all there in support of the quest to find a cure for AIDS. Hollywood also turned out a small contingent of glamorous foot soldiers who traded their makeup kits and designer clothes for sneakers and baseball caps, displaying solidarity with the masses as they walked to help find a cure for AIDS.
Tricia Helfer (“Warehouse 13,” “BSG,” “Burn Notice”), Katee Sackhoff (“BSG,” “Nip/Tuck” “24”), Tamoh Penikett (“BSG,” “Dollhouse”), Scott Niemeyer (Producer), Dave Weddle (Producer/Writer), Michael Nankin (Producer/Director/Writer) joined forces for the cause. Together, they formed a team called the “Frak Ups,” borrowing from the popular “Battlestar Galactica” term for FCUK, raising thousands of dollars for the cause and sporting some home-made hipster chic t-shirts designed, I am told, by Sackhoff for the event. Pretty awesome, especially for a team named the “Frak Ups!” 
Other celebrities on hand included Felicity Huffman, Mary-Louise Parker, La Toya Jackson, and Teri Hatcher, who showed support by hosting a post walk reception at Wolfgang Puck’s in the Pacific Design Center.
This year’s AIDS Walk pulled in a whopping $3.1 million for Aids Project LA or APLA. The fundraiser has produced more than $66 million for APLA and dozens of Los Angeles County HIV/AIDS organizations since its inception in 1985. APLA is one of the largest nonprofit AIDS service organizations in the United States.
The AIDS Walk this year is more critical than ever, according to APLA Executive Director Craig E. Thompson. “A crippling $85 million cut to California’s HIV/AIDS budget means that the generosity of our closest friends is as important than it has ever been,” Thompson said.
