Supernatural: Exploring 137 and Self-Determination

By accepting their destinies as Michael and Satan’s “meat suits” and agreeing to fight as equals, have Dean and Sam just exercised free will, and therefore just altered their futures? Throughout the series, both Dean and Sam’s characters have remained constant, and therefore easily predictable. It is that steadiness in character that makes Satan and Zachariah’s predictions that the boys will become possessed by the Devil and Michael credible. But this sudden change in attitude means that the future might not be set in stone and that anything can happen.

Savvy fans might have noticed that the boys stayed in motel room number 137. 137 is a controversial number in science and religion. In science, it is “Alpha,” the prime number representing the foundation or cornerstone of relativity, quantum physics, and electromagnetism. In religion, 137 is the numeric symbol for the word Kabbalah, which means ‘to receive’ in Hebrew. What does this mean for us “Supernatural” fans? It could mean that in “Fallen Idol,” the boys finally begin to see how their world works and will now embark on the journey back to becoming their core selves.

In future episodes, we might find that Sam and Dean will start to shake off whatever they’ve been manipulated into being or thinking about their destinies. They may begin to realize their own power: that they can will a different future, and that they can stop the apocalypse and defeat the Devil. Looking forward to that finale!
