Ratings were impressive for the premiere episode. According to a Syfy ratings alert, ““SGU” premiered to the best franchise premiere performance in four years, drawing more than 2.3 million viewers – and besting FOX’s “Dollhouse” at 9PM (ET/PT).”
Syfy adds: “Stargate Universe,” which stars Robert Carlyle, Lou Diamond Phillips and Ming-Na, grabbed 2.35 million total viewers along with a 1.7 HH rating, 1.32 million Adults 25-54, and 1.12 million Adults 18-49 during its two-hour debut episode from 9-11PM (ET/PT).”
Here’s Syfy’s official recap:
“During an official visit by Senator Armstrong (Chris McDonald), his assistant Chloe (Elyse Levesque), and Eli Wallace (David Blue), a recently recruited gaming genius, to a secret off-world military base, a surprise – and ferocious – attack leaves Colonel Everett Young (Louis Ferreira) with no choice but to retreat. He orders an evacuation to Earth. A last-minute maneuver by scientist Dr. Nicholas Rush (Robert Carlyle), however, thrusts the escapees headlong into his experiment, which transports everyone to deep space.
The survivors arrive on an uninhabited ship floating billions of light years away from Earth. Panic spreads throughout the group and Col. Young, who was severely injured during the escape, transfers command to Lt. Matthew Scott (Brian J. Smith), before lapsing into unconsciousness. Teams led by Dr. Rush and Sgt. Greer (Jamil Walker Smith) try to make sense of the situation, while Lt. Tamara Johansen (Alaina Huffman), a medic who was days away from leaving the program, is thrust into the role of chief medical officer.”
After secretly contacting the Home World Command using communications stones – a device that allows the swapping of consciousness between bodies across vast distances – Dr. Rush claims that he has been placed in charge by General O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) and there is no hope of returning to Earth. When the ship’s air supply systems begin to fail, his theories are challenged by Eli. As the crisis deepens, divisions emerge between those who want to attempt a return to Earth, including human resources executive Camille Wray (Ming-Na), and those who want to remain aboard the Destiny.”

Given that Stargate has always had humor making fun of other sci fi shows, I guess we should forgive the amount of badly executed pieces of other sci-fi shows they crammed into the pilot, or should we? We start off with the last starfighter recruiting with video game. Lost in space doctor smith nut job running the show. The pathetic voyager theme that dumps you on a ship far from home with no way back. We’ve already established it would be a short series if they didn’t have other earth based technology around so there’s other “seed ships” that preceeded them dropping stargates on all the interesting places to visit. Lets hope this was just a bad attempt at humor and they will figure it out soon. If they do an lost in space episode with a guy in a carrot suit I may have to unsubscribe from the Sci Fi channel completely. (I refuse to call it syfy – what language is that in anyway – indian?)
