Sci-fi/horror fans gearing up for the second season of the Syfy Channel’s hit series, “Sanctuary,” should enjoy the newly released 4-disc DVD set of season one. “Sanctuary The Complete First Season,” starring Amanda Tapping, released in stores on September 15th, comes in a neat glossy box filled with fun extras such as the complete “Sanctuary” webisodes, audio commentaries for all 13 episodes, and behind-the scenes footage, which any fan who appreciates the Herculean effort the special effects team puts in on the show will not want to miss.
The webisodes are engaging, even for those viewers who saw them online a while back, because they have all been combined to run without interruption in two large blocks, and thus afford viewers an opportunity to savor how the show has evolved, from a special effects and narrative perspective. Similarly, the audio commentaries provide an energetic reframing of the entire season, with revelations from the various creative personalities leading the charge.
Of course, fans will want to watch the webisodes and all 13 episodes several times over just to catch all of the juicy socio-political references populating the storylines. One socio-political reference that generates a lot of laughs in the webisodes, but didn’t make the cut in the broadcast version of “Sanctuary for All Part 2” is a scene wherein young Ashley Magnus (Emile Ullerup) is captured by baddie daddy John Druitt (Christopher Heyerdahl). Ashley tries to provoke Druitt by calling him a Republican, an insult he finds both humorous and accurate. Druitt responds with a hilarious and pithy one liner that you’ll just have to watch on the webisodes to experience.
As described by Syfy, “Sanctuary” follows the adventures of the beautiful, enigmatic and always surprising Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping), a brilliant scientist who holds the secrets of a clandestine population — a group of strange and sometimes terrifying beings that hide among humans. Along with forensic psychiatrist Dr. Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne) and her fearless daughter Ashley Magnus seeks to protect these threatened phenomena as well as unlock the mysteries behind their existence.”
According to ScifiWire, the new season promises “many more non-human creatures, more creature-based explanations for history’s biggest events and a peek into the future of all the characters in a time-travel episode.” Season two of “Sanctuary” airs Friday, October 9th on Syfy.
