Project Runway Johnny Sakalis This week, as the search continues for the next big fashion designer and a chance to go to Mercedez Benz fashion week, contestants must create fashion forward clothing from Los Angeles Times newspapers, the ‘newspaper challenge’. Actress Eva Longoria Parker, Marie Claire Senior Editor Zoe Glassner and fashion A-lister Tommy Hilfiger were guest judges.

Johnny Sakalis (West Hollywood, CA), laments being in the bottom three. He says it’s like having the wind punched out of him, and that he’s now found focus. Seems like his real problem is a lack of self-confidence.

Althea Harper (Dayton, OH) fears she can’t hold on to her winner’s crown, while Irina Shabayeva, (New York, NY) hates on her. Irina says she’s the first to congratulate well-earned wins, but she is shocked that Althea was the one who won. Can Irina’s design stand on its own, or must she cut others down to remain competitive? Hilfiger wasn’t sure. “If you turn around, I don’t like seeing the scotch tape, and it could be shorter,” he said of her fun 60s inspired design.

Judges didn’t care too much for Gordana Gehlhausen’s dress (Charleston, SC), which they thought was too conventional looking. Personally, I thought it looked great. It doesn’t look like it’s made of paper at all. It’s colored and fitted to nicely outline the model’s physique. But Judges were looking for more extreme fashion.

Christopher Straub (Shakopee, NM), Althea, Irina, got top scores. Gordana got a low score for being ‘safe.’ Nicolas Putvinski’s design (New York, NY) generated sighs. “I didn’t like this one,’ says Longoria Parker. “It was just tacky,” added Klume. “ Punk should have been something so different,” concluded Hilfiger. Johnny’s design produced bewilderment because it looked like it was a rush job and judges weren’t sure if they bought his story that his original design got destroyed by a wild steam iron. Hilfiger cut him some slack, saying ‘he’ll get it together.’

The judges selected Irina as the winner. Ever humble, Irina reacted by saying “It feels good. It’s past due.” Johnny, on the other hand, got the boot. “You gave us a lot of excuses today…your dress was not well made and it was just a mess over all,” Klume said. Johnny reacted by saying “giving up addiction was probably easier than this.” “I don’t think people realize how hard and emotionally taxing this competition is,” he added. Well, as we all know, even the show’s loser can become winners if they apply themselves.
