Supernatural: Ep. 1 Sympathy for the Devil Review

SUPERNATURALIn the season opener of CW’s horror series ‘Supernatural,’ the Winchester brothers struggle with the ramifications of having set Lucifer free. Armageddon is at hand, and angel Castiel is dead. Angel Zachariah tries the hard sell on Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) once more, this time telling him he’s ‘the Michael Sword’ or angel Michael’s ‘meat-suit’. Dean, ever rebellious, is having none of it. He refuses to become the ‘tool’ of corrupted angels. He’s his own man and he wants to fight the Devil (guest star Mark Pellegrino, “Lost”) on his own terms.

The brothers, Dean and Sam (Jared Padalecki), and Bobby (Jim Beaver) deal with the aftermath of Lucifer’s rising and the stunning news from Chuck the Prophet (guest star Rob Benedict) that Castiel (Misha Collins) was blown to bits by the archangels. Of course, Castiel is not dead, but Judgment day has been ‘jump-started.’ As Zachariah says, ‘it’s apocalypse now.’

Dean has a hard time forgiving Sam’s demon blood drinking habit, which brings on the apocalypse, and Sam finds it hard to apologize. Finally, Dean confesses to Sam that he can’t trust him anymore and he doubts they can win the war to save humanity from the hell’s minions.

This first installment of the new season is a decent opener. But following “The Vampire Diaries,’ the show may have a hard time keeping angsty drama queens and cynics glued to the screen.
