DNA Films and Fox Searchlight Pictures, producers of the gritty action horror sci-fi thrillers “28 Days Later” and “28 Weeks Later” have teamed with Boom Studios to create a new and original comic book series titled “28 Days Later.” The series follows Selena, one of three known survivors of the rage virus outbreak. Selena manages to land in a Norwegian refugee camp, but now struggles to survive a half-baked return to Great Britain at a time when Americans are trying to clear up infection and initiate repatriation to London.
Naturally, Selena wants no part of repatriation to London. But she is seduced into returning to Britain by an American journalist name Clint. A war correspondent who thinks his experience in Afghanistan and Darfur has adequately trained him to address the carnage he will experience on the ground, Clint convinces Selena that he has an iron-tight plan to get them all into London safely. Of course, once on the road, it quickly becomes clear that Clint is full of crap.
“28 Days Later” #1, released August 26th, is a fast-paced and engaging read. Its two key players, Selena and Clint, are fully developed characters easy to follow. Selena’s character faithfully follows that strong-willed fighter of a woman developed in the film “28 Days Later”, and Clint’s character perfectly fits that of the cocky and clueless American seen in the movie “28 Weeks Later.” Without revealing too much of the storyline, Selena kicks major butt and Clint is left wondering what the heck he got himself into.
“28 Days Later” #1 should be easy to follow for those who have not seen the movies. But I imagine it is far more entertaining for those who have.
“28 Days Later” #1 comes in 3 unique covers. Each is a winner worth having, featuring bold reds and stark grays. One sports an impressive cover featuring Selena cracking skulls and taking names. The other two skillfully convey the sense of danger and despair the survivors face on the ground in Britain. The most striking cover features a plaid-skirted girl wearing a gas mask and a carrying a gun in one hand and a machete on her waist. Powerful imagery. The interior artwork is equally strong.
Thumbs up.
