The undead reign supreme, at least for a while, in Kim Krizan’s “Zombies Tales 2061,” a Boom Studios comic book providing a refreshing stab at the zombie genre. Krizan, who wrote romance films “Before Sunrise” and “Before Sunset,” takes readers 25 years into the future to reveal a world where humans have become the chattel and food source of intelligent and organized zombies. Farmed like animals and hunted for sport, humans are on the defense in this macabre and satirical exploration of political and environmental issues.
“I’m worried about what we’re doing to our planet and what our greed and hysteria will drive us to do,” Krizan said in a sit down with Popdecay at the release party for her comic book series “Zombie Tales: The Series,” at Meltdown Comics in Los Angeles. “I wanted to create a world gone mad where people are trying to find sanity in that world, and hopefully can save the human race.” Finding sanity would be impossible for anyone in Krizan’s dystopia, were it not for the efforts of the story’s unnamed hero.
The protagonist in “Zombie Tales 2061,” a busty female freedom-fighter who dresses in zombie skins to move in and out of the human and zombie worlds, makes this comic both hip and inspirational. “When Boom asked me to write this comic, I immediately thought ‘female protagonist saves the world,’ Krizan said. “Could have easily been a male, but I thought it made more sense to make the protagonist be someone having experienced repression on so many levels.”
“Zombie Tales 2061” features cover art by Patrick McEvoy and interior art by newcomer Jon Reed, who masterfully uses color to convey the misery and despair that naturally goes with a prolonged zombie takeover.
“Zombie Tales 2061” is a welcomed addition to the zombie genre. Its epic theme is written well and is accessible to both adults and children. To purchase the comic, visit your local comic shop or check out Boom Studios at http://www.boom-studios.net/
