Blue Dog Democrats Obstruct Public Health Care Option

California Representative Maxine Waters, in a Q&A on the Stephanie Miller talk radio show today, stated that a group of political leaders known as “Blue Dog” Democrats have made it difficult for moderate and liberal Democrats to push forward a public health care option in President Obama’s health care reform initiative.

“Blue Dog” Democrats describe themselves as fiscally conservative. They purport to represent the center of the House of Representatives and appeal to the “mainstream values of the American public,” according to their website at The Blue Dog Coalition. However, a CBS poll recently showed that 72% favored a public health care option, placing the Blue Dog opposition to the public health care option at odds with  mainstream American values.
