A Long Island man, Bryant Neil Vinas, was charged today with attacking a U.S. military base in Afghanistan, according to court papers. In September 2008, Vinas fired rockets at the U.S. military base in Afghanistan, prosecutors said. He was arrested in Peshawar, Pakistan, last November. He is now charged with assisting Al Qaeda by providing “expert advice and assistance” based on “specialized knowledge of the New York transit system and the Long Island Rail Road.”
Vinas could face time for committing conspiracy to murder U.S. nationals, providing material support to a terrorist organization and receiving military-type training from a terrorist group, according to court papers unsealed today in federal court in Brooklyn, New York.
The case is U.S. v. Vinas, 08-00823, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York (Brooklyn).
