Hulu and Fox On-Demand are streaming in its entirety Fox’s superb stand-alone movie, “Virtuality,” written by Battlestar Galactica producers Michael Taylor and Ronald D. Moore. This slick reality-show inspired sci-fi drama follows 12 attractive and emotionally flawed astronauts on a 10-year journey to find signs of intelligent life in the universe. Just six months into a their trip, they learn that Earth is suffering from a major climactic change that threatens to destroy humanity before the trip is completed.

As the astronauts struggle to address issues of infidelity, rape and homophobia, and otherwise cope with their fear of death and the unknown, ‘big-brother’ watches all, beaming it back to Earth for hearty consumption on Fox TV’s the ‘Edge of Never.’ And all the while, no one notices that they have apparently already been visited by intelligent life in the form of a mysterious and malevolent glitch in everyone’s holographic projections.

“Virtuality” is sexy and cerebral. It contains enough eye-candy and “scientific realism” to satisfy the entire family. Its pacing and special effects give Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” competition, while it’s electronic music accompaniment insures younger viewers hang on for the ride.

“Virtuality” was filmed as a TV pilot and aired on FOX as a ‘TV Movie,’ as no network has picked it up for series production. But Moore and Taylor have stated in various articles that the ‘movie’ this should be construed as a start to a series. They suggest strong advocacy from viewers/fans to get the show into series production.
