Results are in for yesterday’s California’s Special Election. Voters gave a resounding “no” to Governor Schwarzenegger’s plan to divert previously allocated funds into the state general fund. Schwarzenegger had hoped to use the funds as a short-term stopgap to bail California out of its current state of economic meltdown. Official Special Election Results

Californians voted yes on Proposition 1F, a measure to limit elected officials salaries during periods of economic crisis, perhaps a signal of growing agitation with what some see as no economic reform or improvements.

Teachers had hoped for a different result for Proposition 1B, which would have generated more cash for education by diverting previously allocated funds into the education fund. But many voters felt that such a diversion was unnecessary.

A voter in the West Hollywood area who wants to remain anonymous said everyone he knows voted ‘No’ because “we’re already taxed beyond belief and there’s no accountability for the money that’s already allocated to education and other social services.” He added, “ giving the state access to more money that they’ll just dump into a black hole makes no sense.”

State officials are now warning Californians to brace for substantial cutbacks in social services.
